The next meeting of the Walpole Peace and Justice Group is on Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at 7:30 PM at United Church. The public is invited.
The Walpole Peace and Justice Group and United Church in Walpole are sponsoring a showing of the documentary, ‘Beyond Belief’ on September 11, 2011 at the United Church at 7:00 PM. In remembrance of 9/11, the award winning documentary ‘Beyond Belief’ is a about two 9/11 widows from the Boston area. Susan Retik and Patti Quigley are two ordinary soccer moms until tragedy strikes. Rather than turning inwards, grief compels them to reach out to widows in Afghanistan. Over the course of two years, as they cope with loss and struggle to raise their families as single mothers, these women dedicate themselves to empowering Afghan women whose lives have been ravaged by decades of war, poverty, and oppression. From the ruins of the World Trade Center to those of Kabul and back, theirs is a remarkable story, a journey of personal strength and international reconciliation, a testament to the vision that peace can be forged… one woman at a time. There will be a brief discussion following the film. People may park in the parking lot to the right of the church, using the driveway after the Center for Community Counseling and Education, and enter the church by the side door.

We are holding a vigil this coming Saturday to speak out for economic justice. The vigil will be held on Saturday, Sept 3, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the corner of Main St. and West St. across from the Walpole Coop Bank.
Any deals to solve the “debt crisis” in Congress must preserve the social programs that are essential to so many people in these difficult economic times. We urge our political leaders to look for other cuts and revenue sources instead of cutting social programs. For example, cutting the military budget and increasing taxes on those who can well afford it. Corporate loop holes should be closed and the Bush tax cuts left to expire. The United States spends almost as much on the military as all the other countries of the world combined. More than half of all US annual discretionary spending goes to the military and war fighting. We join with the Massachusetts 25% Solution campaign in urging that military spending be cut by 25% and the funds used for social services and to support our communities.

We are holding a vigil tomorrow to protest the proposed cuts to Social security, Medicare, Medicaid, and social services. Sorry for the late notice but it is very important that people speak out on this issue. Peace Vigil Saturday, March 5th at 10am
The Walpole Peace and Justice Group is holding a peace vigil on Saturday, March 5th, 10:00 to 11:00 AM at the Walpole Common across from the Walpole Cooperative Bank, or the next corner up depending on snow conditions.
